Out of the Blue

Solid wood, hand carve sculptures. Villa Africa supports a Cape based program incorporating exiled Shona Wood sculptors from Zimbabwe. The style of carving of the ancestral figures is modernist both influenced by African tradition and the 20th century cubist movement. The Sculptor of this particular series is Jabulani Mtetwa. Pieces are colour coded representing the emotion associated with the underlying story/meaning. Wood is recycled from the Cape Overberg where many trees are felled on the working for water program, or by farmers seeking to conserve water resources by clearing river banks. Main species used is eucalyptus globulus – more commonly referred to as Cape Blue Gum
